[Trac] No mail ticket notification in 0.8.4 to bare usernames?

I'm running 0.8.4.  My coders would like to get email notifications
when a ticket is created/changed if they're the assigned worker or the
CC or the reporter.


My reading of the docs and Trac tickets indicates this isn't possible
for bare usernames (the names the users login to Trac with), that only
fully specified email addresses cause mail notifications.  I'm I
correct in this? 

Looks like there are some patches available but right now, and it
might be possible to auto-append an @FQDN to barenames in 0.9, but I'm
not comfortable patching my instances at this point. 

Any other suggestions on how to notify users specified by bare username? 
Or should I just sit tight until 0.9 is released?
